Conceived by the Bavarian King Ludwig II in a romantic style, it was supposed to be a stage for the works of Wagner, the king’s favorite composer. Some rooms were conceived as small opera halls, and the interior of all the rooms reflects Wagnerian motifs.
It took twenty-two years to build it. The castle was completed only in 1869, five years after the death of the king.
